Description

What is Saw Palmetto Extract Fatty Acids?

Saw palmetto, known scientifically as Serenoa repens, is the only member of the Serenoa genus. It is a small palm with a maximum height of about 10 feet. Saw palmetto typically grows in dense thickets in sandy soil, usually as undergrowth in pine forests. This palm is native to the coastal plains in the southeastern United States, although its range reaches as far inland as Arkansas. The saw palmetto is particularly slow-growing, with some specimens living up to 700 years.

Saw palmetto extract has a long history in folk medicine among Native Americans, especially for urinary and reproductive problems. The Seminoles in Florida also used saw palmetto berries as an antiseptic and expectorant, while the Mayans in Central America drank an extract as a tonic. European and American medical practitioners have used saw palmetto extract for more than 200 years for conditions such as general weakness and urogenital problems.

Saw palmetto extract’s most popular use in herbal medicine is in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition is characterized by a gradual enlargement of the prostate gland, and commonly occurs in older men. The early research on this issue indicates that saw palmetto extract supports healthy urethra function.

Health Benefits of Saw Palmetto Extract Fatty Acids

Impotence: Although there are some benefits of saw palmetto for women, the most highly researched and praised health benefits affect men. In terms of impotence, saw palmetto extract has long been known as an herbal treatment for impotence. The exact pathways that saw palmetto takes in terms of sexual organs and hormones is still somewhat unclear, but the research has definitely piled up showing that it can boost your sexual performance and increase virility.

Aphrodisiac: Although this seems similar to the example above, saw palmetto has been known to increase sex drive and libido in both women and men. Although the hormonal impact of saw palmetto primarily affects testosterone pathways, as a natural aphrodisiac, women can also get a bit more pep in their intimate steps with saw palmetto supplementation.

Kidney Concerns: The urinary organs can weaken with age, which is why incontinence is much more common in elderly populations. Saw palmetto research has shown that its strong chemical components can strengthen those urinary organs to preventincontinence, and also maximize the health of the kidneys. If you are at risk for kidney stones or already suffer from them, saw palmetto supplementation can be a great way to prevent future issues or treat current problems.

Prostate Cancer: One of the leading causes of mortality for men is prostate cancer, just as breast cancer is one of the leading causes for women. This form of cancer is particularly dangerous because it is associated with prostate enlargement, something that naturally happens as men age. Saw palmetto extract can reduce prostate enlargement by inhibiting dihydrotestosterone, which stimulates cellular reproduction in the prostate. This lowers the chances of developing prostate cancer and eliminating painful urination and the discomfort that accompanies prostate issues. Saw palmetto is also known to speed healing and reduce bleeding for men who are undergoing prostate surgery.

Muscle Mass: One of the more recent developments in the saw palmetto debate is its impact on muscle mass. Many bodybuilders and people engaged in serious gym time have turned to saw palmetto as a workout supplement. Although research into saw palmetto’s impact on muscle mass and development is still ongoing, early reports do show a correlation between the two. It makes sense, given saw palmetto’s impact on testosterone in the body, which is responsible for muscle mass increases, but it should only be taken in moderation.

Hair Growth: Again, due to saw palmetto’s hormonal impact on the body, some men have begun using saw palmetto to stimulate hair growth as they age. Studies have shown a negative correlation between saw palmetto use and male-pattern baldnesssymptoms, so if your hair is beginning to thin out, consider some supplementation to wind back the clock.

Immune System Health: This is certainly not the most popular use of saw palmetto extract or supplements, but they have been known to generally boost the immune system, particularly for mild conditions such as colds, coughs, and sore throats. Headache and migraine sufferers have also claimed that saw palmetto works as an anti-inflammatory agent and reduces pain and discomfort. This is in line with saw palmetto’s other anti-inflammatory activities in the body, primarily in the urinary tract and gut.

Dosage of Saw Palmetto Extract Fatty Acids

Nature’s Prostate Healer suggests that for a saw palmetto product to be effective, it should provide 320 mg of 85% to 95% fatty acid extract, or 640 mg of a 45% fatty acid extract.

Potential Side Effects of Saw Palmetto Extract Fatty Acids

Saw palmetto is generally well tolerated, with occasional reports of adverse GI effects. Because of well-documented hormone-blocking activity, avoid taking with any hormone therapy, including oral contraceptive and hormone replacement therapy.
